John Friend – Bio Douglas County Clerk of the District Court
A life-long resident of Omaha and a 25-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department. He has a bachelor of science in criminal justice. He retired in 2007 upon being elected to the office of the Clerk of the District Court. He was re-elected in 2010 and 2014 and 2018. He and his wife Karen have been married for 34 years and have two adult sons, both police officers. |

Dr. Mirnics earned his medical degree from the University of Novi Sad (former Yugoslavia) School of Medicine, and his Ph.D. from Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh where he established his own laboratory in 2000. In 2006, his laboratory moved to the department of psychiatry at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.
In 2010, Dr. Mirnics was named James G. Blakemore Professor of Psychiatry and served as the departmental vice chair for research and associate director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, the oldest intellectual and developmental disabilities research center in the United States. In 2016 he joined the UNMC family, becoming the fourth Director of the Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics and Rehabilitation (MMI).
As an internationally recognized, disease-oriented neuroscientist, Dr. Mirnics collaborates with scientists across the country and the world working with his research team to discover the molecular basis of human brain disorders, and develop treatments for these conditions. His innovative research uses a variety of genetic, molecular, cell biology and behavioral tools across multiple diseases models, and has attracted more than $15 million of extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Dr. Mirnics serves on the editorial boards of more than a dozen prominent scientific journals and numerous national scientific advisory committees. He has authored more than 150 scientific publications, which have been cited more than 14,000 times. He has received multiple prominent national and local awards for his scientific endeavors and community engagement, including the 2018 Help is Hope Award from the Autism Action Partnership recognition as the 2019 Friends of Scottish Rite Honoree. He is an elected member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences external council, and serves on the board of directors of Special Olympic International. For all of Dr. Mirnics' accomplishments, as a researcher, teacher, community advocate, and administrator, his greatest passion and desire is to improve the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. His vision is to see MMI become a worldwide leader in transforming the lives of all individuals with disabilities and complex health care needs. He is married to Zeljka Korade, DVM, PhD, Professor of Pediatrics at UNMC, and has two children (Marco and Emma). In his free time, he enjoys reading and fishing, and he is an avid chess player. |

Tammy Conroy is the Director of Education at the Nebraska Humane Society. She has been employed in this capacity since July 2017 and enjoys sharing about humane education as well as what NHS does with the community. Prior to working at the Nebraska Humane Society, Tammy worked in the child welfare field for 14 years. Tammy has adopted a few animals from the Nebraska Humane Society to include her dog Buddy and two hedgehogs Quilliam whom passed away in 2020 and Marshmallow. |

Bio for Mary Fraser Meints A leading advocate for at-risk-children and youth in Nebraska, Mary Fraser Meints, is the Executive Director of Youth Emergency Services in Omaha, Nebraska. As an advocate for homeless youth, Meints is on the board of Metro Area Continuum of Care for the Homeless. Under Meints’ leadership, Youth Emergency Services has grown services to serve youth and young adults experiencing homelessness and near-homelessness. Meints strives for systems improvement in her work to end youth homelessness. Her many years of experience in the world of child welfare and juvenile justice provide a good basis of knowledge in working with the at-risk and homeless populations served by YES. Meints has worked directly with children and families and served in administrative roles with the Department of Health and Human Services and at Uta Halee and Youth Emergency Services. Meints is currently serving on the Young Adults Voluntary Supports and Services (Bridge to Independence) Advisory Committee), focused on the implementation of the law to provide benefits to young adults who have been in the foster care system |

Joe Ricketts is a native of Nebraska City. He graduated from Creighton University in 1968 with an economics degree and began his professional career in the financial services field. In 1975, he co-founded First Omaha Securities. Under Mr. Ricketts’ leadership, First Omaha Securities grew quickly and evolved into TD Ameritrade, a trailblazer in the online trading industry. TD Ameritrade managed hundreds of billions of dollars in client assets and led its competitors with hundreds of thousands of trades per day. In 2020, TD Ameritrade merged with The Charles Schwab Corporation. Since 2008, Mr. Ricketts has devoted himself to a variety of entrepreneurial ventures. He has also actively engaged in philanthropy through Opportunity Education Foundation, The Ricketts Conservation Foundation, The Ricketts Art Foundation, and The Cloisters on the Platte Foundation. His book, “The Harder You Work, the Luckier You Get: An Entrepreneur’s Memoir,” was published in 2019 by Simon & Schuster. Mr. Ricketts and his wife of 58 years have four children and 14 grandchildren. |

Bio for Andrew Rainbolt, Executive Director Sarpy County Economic Development Corporation Andrew Rainbolt has 15 years of housing, workforce, and economic development experience. He joined the Greater Omaha Chamber in 2008 as the Workforce Development Consultant. He held various positions within the Chamber’s Greater Omaha Economic Development Partnership business attraction team. In June of 2015 Andrew was named the Executive Director of Sarpy County Economic Development Corporation, now known as Grow Sarpy. Joe Flaxbeard is a civil engineer and senior project manager working in the Design Group at Lamp Rynearson. Joe is the project manager for the Heartwood Preserve development’s platting, grading and public improvements, working to deliver the civil infrastructure for clients, Applied Underwriters and S.I.D. 583 of Douglas County. Joe has been at Lamp Rynearson for 14 years where he has served as an engineer and project manager on a variety of projects including residential, commercial, redevelopment and infrastructure projects. He is involved with the American Council of Engineering Companies, and volunteers on the boards for Omaha Street School and Skutt Catholic High School. |

State of the State

Congressman Don Bacon has been serving the 2nd Congressional District in Nebraska since January 2017. He served nearly 30 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Brigadier General and was previously the Wing and Base Commander at both Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska and Ramstein Air Base in Germany. The Congressman is a strong advocate on the House Armed Services Committee for our military and veterans, and continues to fight for increased funding to rebuild our military, repair flood damages at Offutt Air Force Base, increase military pay, and improve programs and support to Gold Star families as well as our military members and their families. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, he has worked to pass the 2018 Farm Bill, helped establish a foot and mouth disease vaccine bank, and is a strong advocate for trade which is vital to Nebraska’s Ag industry and economy. He serves as the co-chair for the Foster Care, Electronic Warfare, Intelligence, For Country and Soccer Caucuses. Congressman Bacon has been married to Angie Bacon for more than 30 years and they have four children and six grandchildren. |
